The mission of the Mo'okini Luakini Inc, is to protect, preserve and perpetuate the rich history (mo'olelo) of the Mo’okini Heiau.
We are dedicated to the cultural education of the children of Hawai'i and the world.
Our Vision is to build a bridge from the past into the present, enabling us to create a better future for generations to come.
In the year 480 AD the building of the Mo'okini Heiau was directed by Kuamo'o Mo'okini. The water worn basalt rocks were carried, man-to-man hand-to-hand from Pololu Valley about 14 miles away. It was built from sunset to sunrise in one night.
It is one of the oldest and largest Heiau in Hawaii still standing today. It measures roughly 200 ft. by 125 ft. With walls up to 30 ft. high.
In 1962 - 1963, through the efforts of Kahuna Nui Heloke Mo'okini Senator Daniel K. Inouye, family and friends, the Mo'okini Luakini Heiau was recognized by the Department of Interior as a registered National Historic Landmark. The 79th in the nation to be so designated.
Although not considered a national historic landmark by its own merit, through the efforts of Leimomi Lum, Kamehameha Birthsite was attached to the Mo'okini Heiau registry in remembrance of a great ruler whose dynasty brought his people together, to live in peace.
The lineal descendants will guide you through the eyes of their ancestors.
We are dedicated to the cultural education of our Keiki o ka 'aina as well as the children of the world.
